The names of some of Italy’s most beautiful towns are located in Campania: Sorrento, Amalfi, Positano, Ravello, the islands of Ischia, Procida, Capri – all surrounding the precious Amalfi Coast. Naples, with its postcard perfect landscape, has always been associated with music, good food and a relaxed atmosphere. Pulcinella is the local symbol of the Comedy of Craft: the trickster, interpreted by one of the greatest Neapolitan theatre actor, Eduardo De Filippo. Then, there are Pompei and Ercolano, the ancient cities buried by the Vesuvio volcano. Both cities are still fairly intact, allowing you to walk along the ruins and get to know ancient Campania. Pompei has been included by UNESCO in the World Heritage List. Campania is known throughout the world for its Pizza Margherita, traditionally made with the best Mozzarella (from local buffalo’s or cow’s milk) and sun-ripened tomatoes. San Marzano DOP tomatoes from the Agro Sarno-Nocerino are the most famous and savoury, with their peculiar shape and red colour. The perfect end is represented by the rich pastry-making history of Campania. Some of the regional favourites are Babà, a rum-soaked sponge cake and Sfogliatella, a cream-filled, shell-shaped pastry.
